Tongzhou District is located in the southeastern part of Beijing, at the north end of the Grande Canale. In 2015, the Seventh Plenary Session of the 11th Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China deliberated and adopted the Outline of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Synergetic Development Plan, and Tongzhou formally became the "Beijing Deputy Administrative Center". In 2016, Tongzhou District was listed as the first comprehensive pilot area for new urbanization in China.
